In this fantasy we meet another strong, young female character with special powers. Daine is gifted in many ways--she's an excellent archer--but her special talent lies in her ability with animals, who seem to listen to her words. Daine earns a job working for Onua, the queen's horse mistress, who is impressed by the girl's powers. Tamora Pierce leads in narrating this exciting tale, which is lovingly detailed and populated by a cast of almost thirty people (including the writer's husband).
